Since September 2010, Cambodian women and men between eighteen and twenty-seven can reiceive vocational training as tailors. In the last course there were 10 trainees (f/m) who successfully graduated in December 2014.
The majority of our sewing students usually has no previous sewing experience. They attend morning and afternoon classes, lasting four hours each, and learn the necessary sewing skills from three local professional tailors. KKO was able to afford to pay for the teachers` own apprenticeships and now they are passing on their knowledge, which in general commences with a lesson on the correct threading of a needle and moves onto teaching the students how to sew their own garment. So, the beginners learn the real basics of tailoring, but also start to make simple clothes such as trousers, shirts, skirts and dresses as well as uniforms. While the more advanced students, with their good grounding in basic sewing skills, develop their knowledge in sewing traditional wedding dresses.
Besides the basics, both the beginners and the advanced students are taught creative sewing in the afternoon class, which is led by German “Weltwärts” volunteers who study fashion design in their home country. Creative sewing involves experimenting with unusual styles, fabrics and material. Amongst other things we produce belts made of bicycle an motorbike tube as well as fancy bags for sale to tourists. Part of the profit is paid to the students as a fee for their work and another part is used to fund the activities of the sewing workshop itself or KKO more generally. This ensures that the organization does not have to rely on donations alone.
In the long term, the students who have completed this vocational training course should be able to open and operate their own dressmaking establishments, that will enable them to earn money and support themselves.
The vocational training is given for free. So of course we are always happy for somebody to give KKO and the students a leg up. The best way to support KKO, is to sponsor an individual student to learn sewing skills. We encourage sponsors to send us an annual payment.
