The Situation in Cambodia
Cambodia’s education system
Still bears the scars of the Khmer Rouge regime (1975-1979), which systematically targeted teachers and intellectuals. Decades later, while progress has been made, significant challenges remain—especially in rural areas, where 75% of the population lives. The legacy of this educational devastation persists : Many parents of today’s generation never attended school themselves. Currently, 65% of students in rural areas drop out before completing secondary school, often due to economic hardship. At the same time, English has become a critical skill—fluent speakers earn up to 300% more in tourism and tech-related jobs.
Women face particular disadvantages
22% of Cambodian women are illiterate (compared to 11% of men), and traditional gender roles mean 1 in 5 girls leaves school early. Yet there is hope : Enrollment rates are rising, and modern technology (75% mobile internet coverage) is opening new learning opportunities. Our programs address these challenges teaching, practical English education, and girls’ empowerment initiatives—creating opportunities for a generation that will shape Cambodia’s future. Because education remains the most powerful tool to break cycles of poverty and inequality.
