Khmer for Khmer Organisation is a free educational program available to village children.  Their goal is to teach English, thereby giving the students options in the future.  If they want to continue working on their farms, that’s OK.  However, if they want to use their acquired knowledge, they would be able to apply for jobs in the business world or tourist industry.

I have been volunteering for more than seven years, and this has been one of the most rewarding experiences I have had. Education is something that can never be taken away from you.

I’m a retired Elementary School teacher and administrator.  I worked 35 years in American schools.  I am now volunteering in Siem Reap, Cambodia.  I was assigned to Khmer for Khmer Organisation in 2015.  I have continued to volunteer there due to the dedication and positive attitudes of the staff and students. KKO teaches students from age six to sixteen.  They work opposite the government school schedule, which is half day, split sessions.  The students are respectful and eager to learn.  They make my time there a real pleasure. I work in classes, helping with pronunciation, verb tenses, spelling, and general knowledge about the English language.

It has turned out to be a great experience for me.  I know that what  I do for myself dies with me, but what I do for others lives on forever.
